Man Utd Hold Face-To-Face Talks With 23-Goal Hitman Over Potential Summer Move

The January transfer window is now closed but we can still look at deals that failed to get across the line and those being lined-up for the summer. Today, Manchester United are linked with Dries Mertens….
Manchester United held face-to-face talks with Dries Mertens in a Naples hotel earlier this week to discuss a potential move this summer, according to a report in the Mirror.
Mertens made his name during stints at Utrecht and PSV Eindhoven before earning a move to Napoli in 2013 and he’s been a huge hit at the Serie A giants over the past four years.
The 29-year-old was previously used as a winger but has really found hit form since being moved in to a more central striking role this season with 23 goals and 11 assists to his name so far.
It appears his excellent form has caught the attention here in England as the Mirror are citing a report that originates from Il Mattino that claims Manchester United have held talks with the striker.
The Italian newspaper states that United representatives met with Mertens for two hours in a Naples hotel earlier this week where they discussed a potential switch to Old Trafford at the end of the season.
Mertens is approaching the final year of his contract at the Stadio San Paolo and has been stalling over signing a new deal as he assesses his options ahead of the summer.
It remains to be seen whether United have done enough to persuade the Belgian international to head to the Premier League but I think Mertens would be an excellent signing if the Red Devils could pull it off.
Jose Mourinho is gearing up for another busy summer and the Portuguese coach is likely to be in the market for another forward with Wayne Rooney expected to end his long association with the club after falling out-of-favour.

Mertens is capable of playing out wide, as a No.10 or as a central striker so his versatility is sure to appeal to Mourinho and with his contract due to expire in 2018, he should be available at a reasonable price.
