Chelsea and Manchester United have been boosted in their pursuit of Romelu Lukaku after his contract renewal with Everton was thrown in to doubt
The January transfer window is now closed but we can still look at deals that failed to get across the line and those being lined-up for the summer. Today, Man Utd and Chelsea are linked with Romelu Lukaku…
Chelsea and Manchester United have been boosted in their pursuit of Romelu Lukaku after his contract renewal with Everton was thrown in to doubt, according to a report in the Mirror.
Lukaku has proven to be a superb signing for the Toffees since joining from Chelsea on an initial loan deal in 2013 before his move was made permanent the following summer.
The Belgian international has already netted 20 goals in his 29 appearances so far this season to keep himself in the running for the Golden Boot and his form in front of goal has caught the attention from the upper echelons of the division.
The Mirror are citing a report coming from the Telegraph that claims Chelsea and Manchester United are both keeping a close eye on Lukaku’s situation at Goodison Park as contract talks continue to drag on.
According to the newspaper, negotiations have stalled as Everton are refusing to include any buy out clause in the new deal worth less than £90m as they believe the likes of Chelsea or United would be willing to pay anything less.
The duo could still be prepared to pay the £90m, but Everton feel they will think long and hard about it as it would represent a world record fee and they want to protect their asset as much as possible.
The news comes after Lukaku cast further doubt on his future after telling a Dutch journalist “no” when asked if he would be signing a new contract with Everton – although the striker was smiling when he responded.
Chelsea are expected to be in market for another striker this summer with Michy Batshuayi tipped to leave following a disappointing campaign and the Telegraph suggest that Lukaku is one of Antonio Conte’s prime targets after missing out on the 23-year-old last summer.
However, United are also set to sign a new front-man during the summer window with Wayne Rooney expected to leave and Zlatan Ibrahimovic yet to sign a new deal so they could provide Chelsea with stiff competition for Lukaku’s signature.

It’s going to be an interesting few months and Everton fans will be praying Lukaku pens a new contract before the window opens, otherwise the door will be left firmly open for the likes of Chelsea and United to make their moves.
