Man Utd Team News: Mourinho Confirms Duo Will Miss Rostov But Attacker Returns
Jose Mourinho has confirmed that two players will miss tomorrow’s Europa League clash with Rostov but a key man will be back in the squad.
Manchester United will be looking to book their place in the quarter finals of the Europa League when they take on FC Rostov at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.
Ahead of the game, Jose Mourinho has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this afternoon and he’s given ManUtd.com a team news and injury update.
The United boss confirmed that Anthony Martial remains unavailable for selection after missing Monday night’s FA Cup defeat at Chelsea due to a minor knock.
The French international was unable to return to training on Tuesday so Mourinho says Martial will still be short of fitness for the visit of Rostov tomorrow night.
In a double blow for United, Wayne Rooney is also still missing after being ruled out of the trip to Stamford Bridge earlier in the week due to a knee injury.
Rooney is believed to have suffered the problem following a training ground challenge with Phil Jones and Mourinho says he’s still not ready to resume training so won’t be in consideration against Rostov.
It means that Mourinho will choose from the same squad that faced Chelsea on Monday night with one major addition as Zlatan Ibrahimovic is available as his suspension only applies to domestic games.
Mourinho told the clubs website:
“Martial was injured for the Chelsea match,” confirmed Mourinho. “He couldn’t be selected for the Chelsea match and, if you are injured for the Monday night game, you’re injured for the Tuesday morning training session. And if you are injured for the Tuesday morning training session, it’s not because of today that you can be able to play on Thursday. So he’s out of my mind. I don’t think about him, we have the same players we had in the last match plus Ibrahimovic returning for the Europa League.
“Rooney is injured. He had some kick in his knee area, so he can’t even come out to the pitch. He stays inside the medical department.”
Eric Bailly will also be pushing for a recall after missing the first leg last week due to suspension while Ander Herrera is available despite being sent off against Chelsea on Monday as that ban doesn’t apply in European competition.
United head in to the second leg in the driving seat after drawing 1-1 in Russia last week so they’ll be looking to get the job done at Old Trafford and book their place in the last 8.
