Mane was forced off during the early stages of the second half in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Mersey rivals Everton at the weekend after falling awkwardly following a challenge by Leighton Baines.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was initially hopeful the injury wouldn’t be too serious but reports soon emerged that the club were fearing the attacker had damaged ligaments in his knee.
The Liverpool Echo reported earlier today that Mane was expected to undergo surgery to repair a damaged ligament in his left knee which would rule him out for the rest of the campaign.
A final decision is expected to be made before the end of the week once the swelling goes down but the newspaper suggests that he 24-year-old will go under the knife resulting in an 8-week lay off.
The Senegal international has now taken to Instagram to share a photo of him laying down on a sofa wearing a huge brace to protect his damaged knee.
If, as expected, Mane is ruled out for the rest of the season it would be a huge blow to Liverpool as he’d be sorely missed during their remaining eight matches.
Mane is the clubs leading goal-scorer on 13 goals and is one of Liverpool’s most important players so no doubt Klopp will be devastated to lose him as the Merseysiders try to securing qualification to the Champions League next season.
