Manchester United are eyeing a move for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane which could open the door to a player-plus-cash swap deal involving David De Gea, according to the Mirror.
Jose Mourinho is gearing up for a busy summer in the transfer window as he looks to build a squad capable of competing on all fronts next season and it looks like he’s keen to strengthen his options at the back.
United have been strongly linked with the likes of Michael Keane and Victor Lindelof in recent weeks but the Mirror claim Mourinho is now eyeing an audacious move for Madrid centre-back Varane.
The French international confirmed back in September that United tried to sign him last summer after telling the Mirror that it wasn’t an easy decision to say no to Mourinho.
It appears the United boss is ready to make another attempt to lure him to England as the Mirror are reporting today that the Manchester giants have now made enquiries about Varane’s availability.
Mourinho knows Varane well as he was the man in charge at Madrid when the defender was signed from Lens in 2011 and it looks as though the ‘Special One’ is now hoping for a reunion at Old Trafford this summer.
Varane is considered as one of the best young centre-backs in the world so I’m sure Madrid will do all they can to try and keep hold of him but United’s interest could lead to a sensational player-plus-cash swap deal.
The Mirror suggest that while United are reluctant to lose De Gea this summer they may use the goalkeeper as bait to land Varane if their number one makes it clear he wants a return to Spain.
Madrid have long been linked with De Gea and the La Liga champions have been tipped to renew their interest over the coming weeks but the report says they are reluctant to pay more than £50m.
United obviously value De Gea much higher in today’s over-inflated climate so Madrid may decide to use Varane as part of any proposed deal in order to keep the cost down.

However, big-money swap deals very rarely happen as they are too complex to pull-off so I personally don’t think there is any chance a De Gea/Varane swap could happen this summer.
