Arsenal and Liverpool have made contact with Real Madrid to discuss a potential deal to sign highly-rated midfielder Marco Asensio this summer, according to a report in the Daily Star.
Asensio joined Madrid from Mallorca for just £3m in 2014 and he’s developed in to one of the best young midfielders in European football over the past three years.
The 21-year-old is tipped for greatness in his homeland and has already been capped by the senior Spanish national team having scored 10 goals and provided a further 4 assists for Madrid last season.
However, Asensio has struggled to hold down a regular place in Zinedine Zidane’s first team with the youngster making just 18 starts since moving to the Bernabeu.
It’s led to speculation that the midfielder could look for a move this summer in search of regular action and the Daily Star are citing a report from Diario Gol that claims Arsenal and Liverpool have now held preliminary talks with Madrid about his availability.
Arsene Wenger has been busy adding to his squad already this summer following the arrivals of Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette but it seems the Gunners boss wants to further strengthen after missing out on the top four last year.
A new attacking midfielder could be on the agenda with the future’s of Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in doubt and it appears Asensio is on Wenger’s radar.
Jurgen Klopp is also expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer as he looks to prepare for Liverpool’s return to the Champions League and Asensio would provide good competition for the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana.
However, while Arsenal and Liverpool are keen to lure the Spaniard to England, the report suggests that Asensio is determined to prove himself at Madrid and wants to sign a new deal with the La Liga giants.

Therefore, any potential deal looks highly unlikely unless Madrid decide to cash-in but I think Asensio would be a sensational signing if Arsenal or Liverpool could somehow pull it off this summer.
