Arsenal have made an audacious attempt to sign Manchester United target Gareth Bale amid speculation the attacker could leave Real Madrid this summer, according to a report in the Daily Star.
Arsene Wenger has already broken the clubs transfer record to sign striker Alexandre Lacazette for £52m but it seems the Gunners boss was prepared to smash that figure to lure Bale to the Emirates.
The Daily Star are citing a report from Don Balon that claims Arsenal have made a sensational approach to the Welsh international and were determined to try and get a deal agreed after Wenger identified Bale as the ideal replacement for Alexis Sanchez.
The Chilean international’s future in north London is in serious doubt as he’s got just one year left on his contract and has so far refused to sign an extension so it seemed Wenger was eyeing Bale as the man to fill his boots if he’s forced to sell Sanchez this summer.
But unfortunately for the Gunners, the newspaper says Bale has already rejected any chance of joining Arsenal due to the lack of Champions League football on offer at the Emirates this coming season.
However, the Daily Star do suggest that Bale is concerned about his long-term future at Madrid and may be open to the idea of moving back to the Premier League due to the proposed arrival of Kylian Mbappe.
The 18-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Madrid with Marca claiming earlier this week that the European Champions had agreed a stunning £161m deal to sign the Monaco striker – although this was quickly denied by the club.
The French international’s arrival is likely to see one of Madrid’s current forwards leave this summer and the Daily Star suggest that the Spaniard’s may decide to cash-in on Bale.
Man Utd have long been linked with the Welsh international and ESPN reported yesterday that Jose Mourinho would make a move to sign the attacker if Madrid made it clear he was available for transfer.
Bale has been a huge success since joining Madrid from Tottenham in 2013 with the attacker scoring 67 goals and providing 51 assists in 149 games to help the Spanish giants win three Champions League’s and one La Liga title.

Obviously he would be an excellent addition to the United squad if they could get a deal agreed and he would be the marquee signing that many fans are calling for, however, I have a feeling Bale won’t be going anywhere this summer.
