Tottenham Tipped To Beat Arsenal To Signing Of £50m Attacker
Tottenham could beat rivals Arsenal to the signing of Leicester City’s £50m-rated attacker Riyad Mahrez as they are able to offer Champions League football
Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Tottenham are linked with Riyad Mahrez…
Tottenham could beat rivals Arsenal to the signing of Leicester City’s £50m-rated attacker Riyad Mahrez because they are able to offer him Champions League football, according to a report in the Mirror.
Mahrez is set to leave the King Power stadium this summer after handing in a transfer request at the end of last season and the attacker has attracted interest from a number of top European clubs.
AS Roma have been linked in recent days but Arsenal have also been strongly touted as potential suitors with The Sun reporting earlier this month that Mahrez was holding out for a move to the Emirates.
The Gunners missed out on signing the 26-year-old last summer but it seems Arsene Wenger is ready to renew his interest after struggling to reach an agreement with Monaco for Thomas Lemar.
Wenger is looking to further strengthen his attacking options amid on-going doubts over the future of Alexis Sanchez and Mahrez would be a player who could come straight in and hit the ground running.
However, it seems Arsenal could now face some stiff competition as the Mirror are carrying a report that claims Tottenham are also in the race to sign Mahrez and could even be regarded as favourites for his signature.
Mauricio Pochettino is yet to make any new signings this summer but he’s vowed to strengthen his squad during the final month of the window and a new attacker could be on the agenda due to the injury problems suffered by Erik Lamela.
The newspaper says that Tottenham should be confident of beating Arsenal to Mahrez’s signature due to their ability to offer the Algerian international Champions League football – something their north London rivals can’t.
However, there is still a long way to go before any deal is agreed as the Mirror say Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is likely to be unimpressed by Leicester’s £50m valuation of the attacker.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but I think Mahrez would be a superb signing for either Spurs or Arsenal as he’s proven in the Premier League and was outstanding for the Foxes during their triumphant 2015/16 campaign.
He may not quite have lived up to the standards that won him the 2016 PFA Player of the Year Award last season but we all know what he’s capable of so I can see why Wenger and Pochettino are showing a keen interest.
