Update On Arsenal’s Swoop For £50m Attacker + Wenger Looks To Sell 5 Players
Arsenal are beginning to give-up hope of signing Thomas Lemar this summer as Arsene Wenger turns his attention to offloading some of his fringe players
Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the final weeks of the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, the latest on Arsenal’s pursuit of Thomas Lemar…
Arsenal are beginning to give-up hope of signing Thomas Lemar this summer as Arsene Wenger turns his attention to offloading some of his fringe players, according to the Daily Mail.
Lemar has developed in to one of the most highly-rated young attackers in French football after scoring 14 goals and providing a further 17 assists to help Monaco win the Ligue 1 title last season.
The 21-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates this summer with the Mirror reporting last week that Arsenal were still in talks with Monaco trying to thrash out a deal after Wenger identified him as a prime target.
The newspaper claimed that we were still hopeful of getting a deal agreed for the French international with Monaco believed to be holding out for £50m after rejecting two offers that fell short of their valuation.
However, it looks as though Arsenal chiefs are now resigned to missing out as the Daily Mail claim we have all-but given up hope of persuading Monaco to do business as they are now adamant Lemar won’t be sold this summer.
The French champions have seen their title-winning side ripped apart in recent months and Leonardo Jardim is desperate not to lose any more players with Kylian Mbappe the only star who’ll now be allowed to leave.
The Daily Mail say that Arsenal acknowledge Monaco won’t allow Lemar to leave this summer so Wenger is now highly unlikely to make any more serious additions to his squad before the close of the transfer window.
If this report is accurate then I will be hugely disappointed as we’re at least two, if not three, players short of having a title-winning squad. Lemar would be an excellent signing but I feel we also need a central midfielder and a dominant centre-back as well but it looks like our new additions for the summer could be done.

However, there is still plenty of work to do in terms of selling the dead wood and the newspaper report indicates that Wenger will now focus his attention on selling Mathieu Debuchy, Kieran Gibbs, Carl Jenkinson, Lucas Perez and Joel Campbell over the coming weeks.
All five players look to have no future at the Emirates after falling out-of-favour so they need to find new clubs before the window closes but it’s proving difficult due to their high wage demands.
