The January transfer window is in full swing so clubs are working hard trying to strengthen their squads for the second half of the season and put deals in place for the summer. Today, Arsenal make their move for Jonny Evans…
Arsenal have stepped-up their interest in Jonny Evans after submitting a £10m plus Mathieu Debuchy offer to West Bromwich Albion, according to the Daily Star.
Arsene Wenger has been focussed on strengthening our attack so far this month with the boss keen to land Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after bringing in Henrikh Mkhitaryan as part of a swap deal for Alexis Sanchez.
However, the boss is also hoping to reinforce our defensive options before the transfer window closes next week as Per Mertesacker will retire in June while Laurent Koscielny is hampered by a long-term Achilles injury.
We’ve renewed our interest in signing Evans after failing to land the 30-year-old in the summer and the Daily Star claim that Arsenal have now tested West Brom’s resolve with an opening £10m offer that also includes Mathieu Debuchy going the other way.
That’s a low offer for a player who’s been valued at around £20m-£25m but the newspaper says Arsenal are hoping to drive a hard bargain as we know a £3m release clause will be activated in the summer if the Baggies are relegated.
In addition, the Daily Star claim Arsenal chiefs are fully aware that West Brom’s finances are tight right now and boss Alan Pardew admitted recently that he needs to sell before he can buy this month.
Pardew is quoted by the Daily Star as saying:
“The position at this football club financially is very, very tight. We might have to move a player out to bring players in.
“I’m saying we need to bring players in. “We have to be on our guard for a bid of any player that might interest us.”
It remains to be seen how West Brom respond to our offer but I expect they’ll swiftly reject it and hold out for more as Evans is a vital player for them and it’s not worth their time selling for just £10m.

Including Debuchy in the deal could reduce the price slightly as he’d be a solid player for Pardew but I think we’ll still need to pay at least £15m cash to land Evans this month.
