Wenger Trying To Persuade Midfield Star To Snub Liverpool In Favour Of Arsenal Move
Arsene Wenger is trying to persuade Max Meyer to snub the likes of Liverpool and Bayern Munich in favour of joining Arsenal on a free transfer this summer
The January transfer window in now closed so it’s time to look at those deals that didn’t get over the line and those being lined-up for the summer. Today, Arsenal want to sign Max Meyer…
Arsene Wenger is trying to persuade Max Meyer to snub the likes of Liverpool and Bayern Munich in favour of joining Arsenal on a free transfer this summer, according to the Daily Star.
Meyer has developed in to one of the hottest properties in German football since emerging through the Schalke youth set-up and he’s been a regular with the club in recent years.
The 22-year-old initially made his name as an attacking midfielder but he’s been hugely impressive since being converted in to a deep-lying playmaker this campaign and he’s now one of Schalke’s key players.
However, his future at the Veltins Arena is in serious doubt as his contract expires in June and he’s free to hold talks with foreign clubs about a free transfer move at the end of the season.
Understandably, there has been no shortage of interest in the German international and the Daily Star claim that Arsenal have made Meyer their number one summer transfer target.
The newspaper says Wenger is already working to persuade Meyer to join compatriot Mesut Ozil at the Emirates as the Gunners boss looks to continue with his squad rebuild after another frustrating season.
However, Arsenal will face stiff competition as the Daily Star says Liverpool and Bayern Munich are among the clubs also chasing Meyer’s signature this summer.
Jurgen Klopp is in the market for midfield reinforcements as Emre Can’s contract is up in June while a long-term replacement for James Milner is needed and Meyer is on the Liverpool bosses radar.
So it looks like two of England’s biggest clubs are going to battle-it-out over his signature and Schalke CEO Christian Heidel revealed last month that Meyer is expected to make a final decision over his future soon.
“Max will be deciding shortly if he wants to stay at Schalke past the summer.” Heidel is quoted as saying by the Daily Star
“Max is very happy here, Schalke is his home, we will try to make it him as comfortable financially as possible.
“He is playing the best season of his life, and the coach has found a position for him that Max didn’t believe he could play.
“Personally, I didn’t think he could either.”

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but I think Meyer would be a superb signing for Arsenal or Liverpool if either club was able to lure him to the Premier League.
