Arsenal booked their place in the quarter finals of the Europa League thanks to a 3-1 win over AC Milan at the Emirates which made it 5-1 on aggregate.
It was a cagey opening to the game as Arsenal looked to protect their lead but it burst to life in the 35th minute when Hakan Calhanoglu lashed home a superb effort from outside the box to give Milan a lifeline.
However, their lead didn’t last long as we levelled things up just four minutes later and it was a controversial one as Danny Welbeck won a penalty after tumbling under minimal contact from Ricardo Rodriguez.
Milan were furious, understandably, but the England international striker dusted himself to score the resulting spot kick to make it 1-1 on the night and 3-1 to Arsenal on aggregate.
Any nerves were then eased as Granit Xhaka made it 2-1 [4-1 agg] midway through the second half as his long-range effort found the back of the net thanks to some poor goalkeeping.
Welbeck scored again late on with a close range header as we eased to a 5-1 aggregate win to book our place in Friday’s quarter final draw.
