Arsenal take on Atletico Madrid in the Europa League at the Emirates this evening. Here is a preview with team news, line-ups and predicted score
Arsenal will look to take control of their Europa League semi-final with a win over Atletico Madrid when they arrive at the Emirates this evening.
This will be Arsene Wenger’s final home game in Europe as manager of Arsenal after he announced last week that he’ll step down at the end of the season bringing an end to almost 22 years at the helm.
Many of the players have been saying they are determined to send Wenger away with a trophy under his arm while winning the Europa League would also ensure the new manager would have Champions League football to look forward to next year.
But first we need to get past Atletico and that’s going to be no easy task as Diego Simeone’s side are favourites to not only progress to the final but to win the competition outright.
Atletico currently sit second in the La Liga table above Real Madrid and they’ve conceded just 18 goals in 34 games so far this season so this is going to be an extremely difficult tie.
Team News
Mesut Ozil will return after missing the win over West Ham due to illness while Jack Wilshere is also fit again after recovering from an ankle injury that’s kept him out for the last two games.
Petr Cech is back from a hip injury but Henrikh Mkhitaryan is still not fully fit following a knee ligament problem while Mohamed Elneny is likely to miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury.
Atletico will be without Filipe Luis and Juanfran but Diego Costa has travelled to north London despite carrying a hamstring injury.
Predicted Score
Arsenal 2-1 Atletico Madrid: This is going to be tough as Atletico have performed extremely well in Europe recently and they are a well drilled outfit under Simeone. However, we’re the Europa League’s top scorers this season so if anyone can break Madrid down it should be us, especially at home. I’m expecting the Emirates to be rocking and can see us scoring a couple of goals but I’d be shocked if we were able to keep a clean sheet. I’m going 2-1 Arsenal.
