Man Utd Confident Of Signing £40m Tottenham Star As Pochettino Eyes £50m Replacement
Manchester United are confident of signing Toby Alderweireld in a £40m deal as Tottenham lined-up Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt as a replacement
The summer transfer window is just around the corner and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, the latest on Toby Alderweireld…
Manchester United are confident of signing Toby Alderweireld in a £40m deal as Tottenham line-up Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt as a replacement, according to the Evening Standard.
Alderweireld has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League since joining Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in 2015 but his future at White Hart Lane is in serious doubt.
The Belgian international has failed to agree terms over a new contract and has struggled to force his way back in to Mauricio Pochettino’s first team plans since returning from a hamstring injury back in February.
Alderweireld’s current deal expires in 2019 and Spurs have the option to trigger a one-year extension but that new deal would include a clause allowing the defender to leave for just £25m next summer.
Therefore, Tottenham are ready to cash-in now while they can still command a sizeable fee and the Evening Standard claim United are confident of beating the likes of Chelsea, PSG and Barcelona to a £40m deal.
The newspaper says United are ready to offer Alderweireld significantly more than Tottenham’s final contract offer – which was worth around £120,000-a-week – to lure him to Old Trafford.
Jose Mourinho is expected to strengthen his squad in order to try and compete with Man City next season and Alderweireld would be a significant upgrade on the likes of Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof.
Spurs will no doubt be disappointed to lose the 29-year-old but the Evening Standard claims they will use the money raised from his sale to launch a swoop for highly-rated Ajax star de Ligt.
The 18-year-old has developed in to one of the best young defensive talents in Europe having starred for Ajax last season and he’s already a regular with the Dutch national team.
De Ligt played alongside Davinson Sanchez before he joined Spurs in 2016 and it looks like Pochettino is hoping to reunite the pair in north London this summer.

However, Spurs will have to dig deep as the report says Ajax value de Ligt at £50m so they’ll have to use all of the Alderweirled money and more to sign the talented centre-back.
