Arsenal and Tottenham face a battle with Newcastle United to sign Miguel Almiron with the Atlanta attacker’s agent in England to discuss a possible £22m January move, according to the Sun.
Almiron has been one of the most highly-rated players in the MLS since joining Atlanta for £6m in December 2016 and the attacking midfielder provided 13 goals and 13 assists in 35 appearances to help his club reach the MLS play-offs this season.
The 24-year-old scored a stunning free-kick last weekend to help Atlanta beat New York City and book a date with New York Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference play-off final and he’s has also established himself at international level having earned 12 caps for Paraguay so far.
His potential has alerted several clubs here in the Premier League with the Sun claiming that Arsenal have been showing a keen interest in recent weeks while Tottenham have also been considered front-runners to secure a deal that would cost around £22m.
The newspaper says Atlanta president Darren Eales recently admitted Almiron will join an English team this winter but it looks like the north London duo face fresh competition with Newcastle joining the chase for his signature.
The attackers agent, Daniel Campos, was at St James’ Park last weekend to watch Newcastle beat Bournemouth 2-1 and he’s confirmed he’s in England to hold talks with “two or three’ interested clubs about a potential deal to sign Almiron.
Campos is quoted by the Sun as saying:
“We saw Newcastle’s party because we are in England. There are two or three clubs interested and we have been working in the UK.”
Attackers wanted
Arsenal have enjoyed a solid start to the season under new boss Unai Emery but the Gunners have a lack of options in attack, particularly out wide, so they’re expected to dip in to the market this winter and Almiron is seemingly on their radar.
The South American can play on either wing or as a central attacking midfielder so he’d give Emery another versatile option in the final third if Arsenal were able to win the race for his signature.
However, Tottenham are also on Almiron’s case as Mauricio Pochettino looks to strengthen his squad having failed to sign a single player in the summer while Newcastle are needing to revamp their attack after scoring just nine goals so far this season so it’s going to be interesting to see where he ends up this winter.
