Arsenal are set to launch a late move to sign out-of-favour Chelsea defender Gary Cahill on loan as Unai Emery looks to ease his defensive injury crisis
The January transfer window is coming to a close so managers are working hard on strengthening their squads and identifying targets for the summer so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest rumours. Today, Arsenal are linked with Gary Cahill…
Arsenal are set to launch a late move to sign out-of-favour Chelsea defender Gary Cahill on loan as Unai Emery looks to ease his defensive injury crisis, according to the Mirror.
We’ve seen our defence ripped apart by a number of injury problems in recent weeks with Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin ruled out for the rest of the season with serious knee ligament injuries.
Sokratis has also been ruled out for the next month after suffering an ankle injury during our defeat to Manchester United last Friday while Laurent Koscielny also picked up a jaw problem in that game after being kicked in the face by Romelu Lukaku.
Nacho Monreal and Dinos Mavropanos have only recently returned from long injury lay-off’s so they’re still working their way back to full match fitness meaning Emery is facing a mounting selection headache at the back.
The boss has previously admitted he’s in the market for midfield and attacking reinforcements but the injuries to Sokratis and Koscielny have forced his hand and it looks like we’ll also dip in to the market for another defender before the end of the month.
The Mirror claim Arsenal are now set to launch a move to sign Cahill over the coming days after the 33-year-old was told he’s free to leave Stamford Bridge before the window closes on Thursday night.
Cahill has barely played under Maurizio Sarri this season and is out of contract in the summer so any loan fee would be minimal but it remains to be seen whether Chelsea would be willing to help out a top four rival.
The likes of Crystal Palace and Fulham are also being linked with the 6ft 4in centre-back so you’d expect the Blues would do business with them rather than let Cahill join Arsenal to help solve our defensive issues.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days but I’d be surprised if the former England international ends up at the Emirates as it would be madness for Chelsea to help out Arsenal at this stage of the season.
