Man Utd handed major double injury boost ahead of crucial Liverpool showdown
Man Utd have been handed a double injury boost ahead of their clash with Liverpool with Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial set to make swift returns
Manchester United have been handed a major double injury boost ahead of their clash with Liverpool on Sunday with Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial set to make swift returns, according to the Mirror.
Lingard was forced off with a hamstring injury during the closing stages of the first half against Paris Saint-Germain last week and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer later suggested the attacker had been ruled out for up to three weeks.
Martial was also injured during the Champions League defeat to the French champions at Old Trafford last Tuesday night after suffering a groin problem which forced him off at half-time.
The Frenchman was also expected to be out for two-to-three weeks, however, the Mirror are reporting that both Martial and Lingard are now set to make swift recoveries and should return ahead of schedule.
The newspaper says the injuries are not as bad as first feared and United are confident one or both of the attackers could be available for the visit of arch rivals Liverpool to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
That news will come as a huge boost to Solskjaer as although Martial and Lingard will miss tonight’s FA Cup trip to Chelsea, the caretaker United boss would be delighted if one or both of the forwards were available to take on Liverpool.
Martial and Lingard have both played key roles since Solskjaer came in to replace Jose Mourinho in December with the duo forming an impressive front-line alongside Marcus Rashford in recent weeks.
Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku are vying for recalls against Chelsea this evening but Solskjaer would love to have at least one of Lingard or Martial available for selection when Jurgen Klopp’s title contenders head to Old Trafford at the weekend.
United have enjoyed an excellent run of form under the Norwegian coach that’s seen them climb back in to top four contention so the Manchester giants will be desperate to not only dent Liverpool’s title hopes but also boost their own Champions League qualification chances with a win on Sunday.
