Liverpool have been dealt a fitness concern after Roberto Firmino missed training today while Dejan Lovren will miss tomorrow’s clash with Bayern Munich
Liverpool have been dealt a fresh fitness concern after Roberto Firmino missed training today while Dejan Lovren has been ruled out of tomorrow’s clash with Bayern Munich, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Firmino was fully expected to once again start in attack for Liverpool during the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against the Bundesliga champions at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Jurgen Klopp gave no mention to the Brazilian international being a doubt for the match when he provided a team news update at his pre-match press conference earlier today.
However, the Liverpool Echo are one of several media outlets who’re reporting that Firmino has now emerged as a major fitness doubt after missing training this afternoon after being sidelined by a virus.
The South American forward wasn’t spotted out on the training pitches at Melwood while the rest of the Liverpool squad were put through their paces and it remains to be seen whether he’ll recover in time to face Bayern.
The Liverpool Echo says Firmino will be assessed on Tuesday morning and while Liverpool chiefs are hopeful he’ll be available tomorrow night, Daniel Sturridge is on stand-by to deputise in attack against the German giants.
In a double blow for Liverpool, the newspaper says Lovren has now been ruled out of the Champions League last-16 clash after failing to take part in training today.
The Croatian international has been struggling with a hamstring injury for the past six weeks and Klopp said at his press conference earlier today that Lovren would be assessed at training this afternoon.
However, the centre-back wasn’t among the group at Melwood so with Joe Gomez still out with a fractured leg and Virgil van Dijk suspended, Fabinho is expected to deputise alongside Joel Matip in defence.
In better news for Liverpool, Xherdan Shaqiri did take part in training after recovering from an abdominal injury that saw him miss the Bournemouth game while Georginio Wijnaldum is also expected to be fit after recovering from illness.
