Arsenal are finalising a £27m deal to sign William Saliba from Saint-Etienne after beating Tottenham to the centre-backs signature this summer, according to TF1.
Saliba is a product of the Saint-Etienne youth system and emerged as one of the most exciting young defenders in French football after breaking into the first team with 19 appearances last season.
The 19-year-old put in a string of impressive performances at the back to help his club secure fourth in the Ligue 1 table and they finished the season boasting one of the best defensive records in the division.
Saliba’s potential has caught the attention of clubs here in the Premier League as Arsenal and Tottenham have been linked this summer with the Mirror reporting last week that the Gunners were in pole position ahead of their north London rivals to seal a deal.
It appears Unai Emery is now on the verge of wrapping-up his second signing of the summer as French outlet TF1 claim Saliba will join Arsenal for £27m with the two clubs putting the finishing touches on the deal.
The report says the Gunners have beaten Tottenham to Saliba’s signature and the centre-back will spend next season on loan at Saint-Etienne once his switch to the Emirates Stadium is finalised.
The Daily Record are also reporting that Arsenal have submitted an improved offer for the French U21 international so it appears a deal is in the pipeline with Saliba set to follow Gabriel Martinelli in joining the Gunners this summer.
Emery desperately needs to improve his defence after Arsenal conceded 70 goals across all competitions last season and their poor performances at the back ended up costing them Champions League qualification.

Saliba will be an exciting addition to Arsenal’s squad, however, he won’t be able to sort out their issues in defence next season while on loan at Saint-Etienne so it seems Emery views him as a long-term signing.
