Arsenal climbed up to third place in the Premier League table with a drab 1-0 victory over Bournemouth at the Emirates this afternoon.
Arsenal started strongly and after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang went close to opening the scoring the north Londoners eventually broke the deadlock in the ninth minute when David Luiz headed home from a Nicolas Pepe corner.
The Gunners were on top during the rest of the first half and had a couple of decent penalty shouts waived away after Pepe appeared to be fouled twice in the area by Bournemouth defenders.
The visitors started the second half on the front foot and should have levelled things up when Callum Wilson danced his way through the Arsenal defence but failed to find a finish from a tight angle.
Arsenal’s level dropped considerably in the second half as Bournemouth began to look more dangerous but neither side were able to have any significant attempts at goal during a poor 45 minutes.
Aubameyang hit the post in stoppage time but he would probably have been ruled out for offside anyway as Arsenal held on to secure a 1-0 win that sees them head into the international break sitting third in the table – just one point behind Man City after they lost at home to Wolves.
