Chelsea welcome Manchester United to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night for a heavyweight clash in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Here is the latest team news ahead of the game….
Chelsea
Frank Lampard is expected to rotate his squad with key players being given a rest in the League Cup which should open the door for the likes of Reece James, Charlie Gilmour, Michy Batshuayi and Willian to get recalls.
However, Lampard has a number of injury concerns to deal with heading into tomorrows game and the Chelsea boss confirmed at his pre-match press conference this afternoon that N’Golo Kante and Antonio Rudiger remain out.
Kante has been on the sidelines since picking up a groin injury while away with the France squad during the international break earlier this month and the midfielder is still not considered fit enough to return for Chelsea tomorrow.
Rudiger has been back in training recently after recovering from a groin injury that’s hampered him for the past month but Lampard says the centre-back is still not ready to be available for selection just yet.
Andreas Christensen remains on the sidelines for Chelsea with a hamstring injury while Ross Barkley is also expected to miss the visit of Man Utd tomorrow due to an ankle injury that he sustained earlier this month.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek is the final significant absentee for the hosts as he’s continuing to work his way back to full fitness from a serious Achilles injury so Chelsea will be without five first team players on Wednesday night.
Man Utd
The situation is just as bad in the Manchester United camp as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had to deal with a lengthy injury list of his own throughout the season.
Paul Pogba isn’t expected to return from an ankle injury for another month while Nemanja Matic is continuing his rehabilitation from a muscle injury and Luke Shaw remains out with an on-going hamstring issue.
Defender Axel Tuanzebe is expected to miss out once again tomorrow night due to a groin injury while Diogo Dalot, Eric Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah remain on the sidelines so United will be without at least seven players for the trip to Chelsea.
With so many injuries, Solskjaer has relied on his youngster to make up the numbers and the United boss has confirmed Brandon Williams and James Garner are set to start in the Carabao Cup tomorrow night.
Fellow youngsters Mason Greenwood, Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes could also feature against Chelsea while Andreas Pereira is pushing for a recall after being named on the bench in recent games.
