Manchester United could sign Tottenham target Bruno Fernandes in January after Sporting Lisbon decided to cash-in on the £65m-rated midfielder this winter, according to reports via the Daily Mail.
Fernandes was heavily linked with a move to England during the summer after enjoying a sensational campaign that saw him provide 32 goals and 18 assists last season to become one of the most productive attacking midfielders in Europe.
Manchester United and Tottenham were among the clubs who showed a strong interest in signing the Portuguese international and the Daily Mail claims the two clubs remain keen on luring Fernandes to the Premier League.
United need to reinforce their midfield options after losing Ander Herrera in the summer while Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic continue to be linked with moves away from Old Trafford and Fernandes would add some much-needed creativity to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
The Daily Mail says Man Utd have now been handed a boost in their pursuit of the 25-year-old as they cite a report from O Jogo that claims Sporting Lisbon are ready to sell Fernandes for £65m this winter in order to clear their £57m debts.
That sort of money shouldn’t be a problem for a club with the resources of Manchester United and they are expected to back Solskjaer in the transfer market in January after enduring a frustrating start to the new campaign.
However, United could yet face stiff competition for Fernandes’ signature as Tottenham are also being tipped to enter the market for a new midfielder with Christian Eriksen expected to leave after failing to agree terms over a new contract.
The Daily Mail says Spurs remain keen on signing Fernandes as a replacement for the Dane so they will battle it out with Man Utd if the Portuguese star decides to leave Lisbon and come to England this winter.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but Fernandes would be an excellent signing for either United or Spurs. He’s already scored nine goals in 17 appearances this season and is expected to play a key role for Portugal at Euro 2020 having scored during their win over Luxembourg at the weekend.
