Arsenal will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table when they take on Everton at the Goodison Park on Saturday lunchtime.
The Gunners have enjoyed a sensational season so far as they’ve defied all expectations to be topping the league table at the half-way stage. Not many pundits predicted such an impressive campaign back in August, that’s for sure.
A thrilling 3-2 victory over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium last time out in the league means Arsenal have 50 points from their 19 games played. Manchester City are second – five points behind having played a game more – so the Gunners can move eight points clear with a win over Everton.
However, the North Londoners can expect a tough game this weekend as Sean Dyche takes charge of his first match as Everton boss since replacing Frank Lampard last week.
Dyche will demand a much-improved display from the Toffees – who’ve been woeful so far this season as they sit joint bottom of the table having taken just 15 points from their 20 games. The good news is it’s extremely tight in the bottom half and a win could see Everton move level with 14th-placed Leicester City.
Betting odds
This game should attract plenty of interest in the markets as it’s the first Premier League table of the weekend. Football fans can use a variety of betting apps to place bets on this match, but it’s always best to look around to secure the best odds.
Jorginho debut?
Arsenal further strengthened their squad with the signing of Jorginho on deadline day. The Italian international arrived in a £12m deal from Chelsea to bolster Mikel Arteta’s midfield options. With Thomas Partey a doubt after picking up a knock during the FA Cup defeat to Man City last week, Jorginho could be handed his debut this weekend.
Partey will be handed a late fitness test but Arteta may not want to risk his star man from the start. Emile Smith Rowe is also a doubt after missing the City game with a muscle problem while Gabriel Jesus is still working his way back from knee surgery.
As for Everton, they’ll be without James Garner due to a back injury. Andros Townsend is also out with a knee problem while Nathan Patterson, Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey all remain on the sidelines.
Prediction
We expect the passionate Everton fans to create a hostile atmosphere and the hosts should give a good account of themselves with new boss Dyche known for his no-nonsense approach.
However, the fact is Arsenal are flying this season and should have too much quality in the end for the Toffees. We expect them to take this opportunity to put the pressure on Man City by opening up an eight point lead at the top of the table. Everton 1-2 Arsenal
