Here, we take a closer look at five of the biggest surprises of the Premier League so far this season, from relegation candidates shocking title contenders
The Premier League has already produced some of the most shocking and unexpected results this season. The teams that were expected to perform well have struggled, while others that were predicted to struggle have surprised many with their performances.
Here, we will take a closer look at five of the biggest surprises of the Premier League so far this season, from relegation candidates shocking title contenders to new managers beating league leaders.
Manchester United 1 – 2 Brighton & Hove Albion
In the opening game of the Premier League season, Brighton and Hove Albion secured a hard-fought victory at Old Trafford, denying Manchester United’s new manager, Erik ten Hag, a win in his first game in charge. This was Brighton’s first victory at Old Trafford, having managed only one draw in their previous nine league visits. Pascal Gross scored two goals in the first half, stunning the Red Devils who were hoping to bounce back after a disappointing end to last season. Despite the introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo in the second half, United failed to deny Brighton a deserved win.
Brentford 4 – 0 Manchester United
In a magnificent performance, Brentford scored four goals within 35 minutes, dealing Manchester United a crushing defeat at Gtech Community Stadium, leaving them at the bottom of the league. Josh Dasilva opened the scoring for the hosts, with his shot from distance managing to evade United’s goalkeeper David de Gea.
Mathias Jensen doubled the lead after intercepting former Brentford player Christian Eriksen. Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo also added goals to Frank’s side, putting them up by four in an astonishing first half in which they dismantled United. According to betting data analysis, the result of 4-0 to Brentford was calculated to have only a 0.5% likelihood of occurring.
Leeds United 3 – 0 Chelsea
Leeds maintained their undefeated record start to the season by securing a memorable victory over Chelsea’s revamped team. Their display, which eventually would help to lead to Thomas Tuchel’s dismissal as manager, showcased Chelsea’s first-half mistakes as the hosts capitalized on their errors.
Édouard Mendy gifted Leeds their first goal after mismanaging a back pass, allowing Brenden Aaronson to take advantage. Just four minutes later, Rodrigo scored his fourth goal of the season from a free-kick on the edge of the box, courtesy of Jack Harrison’s delivery, which Raheem Sterling had conceded.
Leeds also outplayed Chelsea in midfield, echoing the famous historical battles between the two teams. The victory sealed Leeds’ first Premier League win over Chelsea in seven attempts dating back to 2002, with Harrison scoring the final goal after Daniel James’ assist.
Liverpool 9 – 0 Bournemouth
Liverpool matched the record for the biggest win in Premier League history as they produced a sensational performance to crush newly promoted Bournemouth at Anfield and kickstart their season.
Having struggled with two draws and a defeat in their opening three games, manager Jürgen Klopp referred to their start as a “false start” but his team responded in emphatic style.
Manchester United previously achieved this margin of victory twice – against Ipswich in 1995 and Southampton last year – while Leicester City did the same against the Saints in 2019.
Liverpool got off to a perfect start by scoring two goals in the opening five minutes against the Cherries and setting a raucous Anfield rocking. Luis Díaz powerfully headed home the opener and the impressive Harvey Elliott curled in his first top-flight goal with a sublime strike from outside the box. Full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold added the third goal by thumping a long-range shot into the top corner, with all three goals assisted by Roberto Firmino.
The Brazil forward then scored a spectacular goal of his own by acrobatically converting from inside the six-yard box, and Virgil van Dijk headed in the fifth from a corner – all before half-time.
Scott Parker’s men endured a miserable start to the second half when Chris Mepham stretched to divert the ball into his own net, and Firmino poked home the seventh of the afternoon after a fortunate deflection. Summer signing Fábio Carvalho volleyed in with eight minutes left for goal number eight, and Colombian winger Díaz headed in the ninth to complete a remarkable, historic win.
Everton 1 – 0 Arsenal
New Everton manager Sean Dyche got off to a dream start as his team stunned the then Premier League leaders Arsenal with a 1-0 victory at Goodison Park. The hosts picked up their first win in 11 games, thanks to a header from James Tarkowski off a corner from Dwight McNeil. Before the game, thousands of Toffees fans protested against the club’s board and its running of the club. However, under Dyche’s leadership, Everton played with a renewed spirit and determination.
The Premier League has produced some of the most unexpected and remarkable results so far this season. These results have demonstrated that anything is possible in the world of football, and even the biggest teams are not invincible. As the season continues, fans eagerly await more surprises that this season has in store for them.
