Who will get out of group C in the qualification for Euro 2024: preview
The group round of selection for the European Championship 2024 will run throughout the year, starting in March 2023. Who will win the group?
The group round of selection for the European Championship 2024 will run throughout the year, starting in March 2023. The current tournament is attended by 53 teams, which are divided into 10 groups. Upon completion of the qualification, 20 national teams will be selected for the final stage.
For tickets to the final stage of the European Championship from group “C” fight: England, Italy, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta. In March 2023, each of these national teams managed to play at least one match, and now the chances of going further appear more clearly.
England
“Three Lions” exemplary start in the current tournament. First, the team of Gareth Southgate in Naples defeated Italy with a score of 2:1. It was possible thanks to Declan Rice’ superb goal and Harry Kane converting from the penalty spot. Then at Wembley, England beat Ukraine 2:0. With consecutive wins under their belt, England now lead the group ahead of Italy and North Macedonia.
England are one of the strongest teams in Europe and it’s clear after the first two qualification matches that they are firm favourites to qualify for the finals next year.
Italy
The Italians suffered a somewhat unexpected opening group game loss at home to England. Having conceded twice in the first half, thanks to the efforts of Mateo Retega, who was assisted by Lorenzo Pellegrini, the Italians closed the gap, but could not restore parity. Then they beat Malta away without conceding to take second spot in the group.
Under the direction of Roberto Mancini, a young and promising line-up will realistically compete for second place as England are firm favourites to progress as group winners. To finish in the top two, the Italians need to beat Ukraine as they are likely to be their nearest rivals for that all-important qualification spot.
Ukraine
The Ukrainians only played one match in the March international break and they slumped to a defeat to England at Wembley. In the 37th minute, Harry Kane opened the scoring before Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka doubled their lead with a stunning effort. The Ukrainians were poor and deserved to lose. If Olexsandr Zinchenko and the rest of his compatriots continue to perform like this, they have no chance to progress to the Euro finals.
The Yellow-Blues have a lot of time ahead to correct the situation, and they’ll be confident of beating North Macedonia and Malta, but it is unlikely that they will be able to take anything from the games against Italy or England. North Macedonia
The “Red Lynxes” started their journey in the current competition with a narrow 2-1 home win over Malta. On the face of it, the game seemed close, but in reality North Macedonia dominated the game and should have won by a larger margin. The Red Lions have a lot of difficult matches ahead now and they are realistically unlikely to finish in the top two. England, Italy and Ukraine are all far stronger and should have no trouble winning their respective matches against North Macedonia.
Malta
Malta slumped to a 2-1 defeat to North Macedonia and they are expected to be the whipping boys of the group. They followed it up with another 2-0 defeat to Italy where they mustered just two shots on Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal.
The Maltese had an extremely unsuccessful start to their qualifying campaign and it’s not going to get any easier, so they’ll be lucky to just register a win over the coming matches.
Our forecast
Malta are the absolute outsiders and have no chance of progressing from the group. North Macedonia are unlikely to cause too many problems for the stronger sides while Ukraine will hope to be Italy’s nearest rivals for second place. England are the firm favourites to qualify as group winners and the likelihood is Italy will finish second.
