Chelsea set to raid Anfield
By Football Talk.
Chelsea are lining up a double swoop for Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano and Yossi Benayoun, according to the Daily Mail. Chelsea are hoping to take advantage of Liverpool’s financial difficulties and see the duo as replacements for the out-going Michael Ballack and Joe Cole. Liverpool have no wish to sell, especially Mascherano, but with the persistent financial problems and uncertainty over the clubs ownership, a big-money bid from the double winners may be difficult to turn down.
Argentina captain Mascherano admitted last week that his family is struggling to settle on Merseyside and takes regular trips to London with his wife. Although his first choice would be a move to Spain, preferably Barcelona, he may be willing to stay in the premiership and join the champions Chelsea.
The situation with Benayoun could be resolved quickly as the player himself has declared Carlo Ancelotti is keen for his services and a £6m move could be completed soon.
Benayoun, 30, said: ‘Ancelotti wants me for next season and now everything depends on Liverpool. Chelsea will have to pay some £6m but I believe that in the end I’ll be moving there.’
If Benayoun makes the move South he may find himself passing Joe Cole on the motorway as Liverpool are interested in taking him to Anfield on a free transfer, but they will face stiff competition from the likes of Tottenham and possibly Manchester United who have both been linked with a move for the England international.
