Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has claimed he has one target for this season; to finish above Tottenham in the league.
The Gunners remained fifth after losing 1-0 to league leaders Man City on Sunday while third-placed Tottenham were able to grind out a 1-0 win against Sunderland, opening up a five point gap between the North London rivals with Spurs also having a game in hand.
However, the Polish stopper is not disheartened by the current state of affairs, and although he concedes Spurs are in good form right now, is confident Arsenal will be above their rivals by the end of the season.
“Getting above Tottenham is the main target,” said Szczesny. “We don’t want to finish below them no matter what.
“That’s just my personal ambition because I am one of the fans and so it means a lot to me to finish above them. I am confident we will do so.
“They will slip up eventually. They have been in good form – you have to give it to them – but I am confident we are a better side and will finish above them. Time will tell if they can handle the pressure but they look good at the moment. Hopefully they will drop points in the second half of the season.”
England colleagues Jack Wilshere and Jermaine Defoe have also stocked the fires by agreeing terms on a bet whereby whoever finishes lower in the league come the end of the season, will pay £3000 to charity. Although Wilshere has since upped the ante to £5000. Very confident talk considering how the table currently looks.
