Man Utd Hijack City’s Move For Unsettled Van Persie
Manchester United are ready to hijack Manchester City’s move for Arsenal’s want-a-way striker Robin van Persie, with Fergie determined to sign the Dutchman.
Manchester United are ready to hijack Manchester City’s move for Arsenal’s want-a-way striker Robin van Persie, according to the Daily Mail.
The report claims that Sir Alex Ferguson is determined to wrestle the Premier League title back from their neighbours next season, and the Scot sees the signing of van Persie as an important part of his plans this summer.
The news comes after the Dutchman revealed on Wednesday that he will not be signing a new contract at the Emirates. The 28-year-old came to the decision after holding face-to-face talks with manager Arsene Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis at the end of last season, and following the meeting he feels the club lack ambition and he needs to leave to win trophies.
It’s believed nobody at Arsenal knew the statement was coming and it has left Wenger and Gazidis fuming. The pair contacted RVP’s agent, Kees Vos, immediately to make their feelings clear.
The club quickly released their own statement on Arsenal.com saying they accept Van Persie’s decision but expect him to fulfil his commitments with the club in seeing out the final year of his contract.
However, the Daily Mail suggest that Arsenal are resigned to losing the player this summer as they believe he has already lined up a move elsewhere, and has released his statement in order to try and force through the deal.
Premier League champions Manchester City are now ready to make their interest official and are prepared to offer van Persie £225,000-a-week, but they will now face stiff competition from United with Fergie urging the club to do all they can to land the 30-goal striker.
Should Arsenal decide to cash-in, the Mail claim the Gunners will accept an offer in the region of £20m for their captain.
