After a fairly poor first half, United missed the best chance of the game to grab a winner when Wayne Rooney missed from the spot just before half time, Valdes making the save with Rooney then missing the rebound.
Neither side could find a goal in the second half so the game went to a three-man shoot-out, however United’s penalty anguish continued with Ashley Young and Nani failing to convert from 12-yards; Xavi and Pique both making no mistake for the Spaniards.
