Arsenal drew their second consecutive game of the season with a 0-0 draw against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday. Here are my player ratings from the game.

Player Ratings

Mannone. 7. Given the it was Stoke City away, very good.

Jenkinson 6. Steady Eddy and no more today and that may be the story of his career. Wish he looked more confident when faced with a winger run at him.

Mertesacker 7. Woukd like him to be more dominant but he rebuffed most of what came his way. One header under real pressure near the end of the game was magnificent.

Vermaelen 7. Like his partner did all that was required.

Gibbs 7. Crossing has gone backwards this season so far but defensively he has improved. Played well and has the technique to add to our game. Unlike Santos he doesn’t charge forward, like it so much up there that he decides to hang around with his new mates, the forwards.

Arteta 6. Ok but needed to be more penetrative in his passing.

Diaby 7. Slowly, slowly this player improves after the injuries. On Sunday he matched Stoke players physically and pushed forward well. Dithers around the opposition box though. Will get sharper.

Cazorla 8. Plays the hardest passes (Arteta please take note) and most come off for him.

Gervinho 5. Just didn’t happen for him.

Giroud 6. Caused Stoke problems in the air. Defended well which at the Britannia is vital. A goal will do wonders for him.

Podolski 6. Started well which offers hope for the rest of the season but faded in the second half.

Theo 6. One decent run. Could have been brought on earlier for the ineffective Gervinho.

The Ox 6. Looked fit so let the competition for places begin in earnest.

Ramsey 6. Ditto the competition for places bit but if he ever replaces Cazorla I’ve got a very large hat I’m going to eat.

:)…i haven’t read the pundits comment, but im sure it is about gloom and doom lol, which isn’t. The game is so boring for 90 minute, but what to do it is stoke. Glad there is no injury or broken leg, yup a few signing needed before the transfer windows end. New player look not really gel yet, but what it is fun to see they have physical strength and it is fun to see we fight back physically…

Fair enough ratings , but what is ‘alternative ‘ about them …? Also it must be said rather a lot of optimism regarding Diaby that has to be proven … and some excuses thrown in … Gervinho always plays like that … 4 goals in 30 odd appearances and not many assists says so. Chamberlain should start ahead of Gervinho .
We need to win now at Anfield on Sunday to get some confidence built – one point away at Stoke in another 0-0 bore yawn draw would have been okay had we won at home against Sunderland … if we lose at Anfield it’s going to be a tough fight to get 4th in the league with City away , Chelsea at home and United away to come in the next few weeks.

“if we lose at Anfield it’s going to be a tough fight to get 4th in the league with City away , Chelsea at home and United away to come in the next few weeks.”
We certainly don’t want to lose the game, but it wouldn’t have a huge impact in terms of preventing us getting 4th. That position will be determined more by how well we do against lesser sides.

Liverpool in my view are the main threat to our 4th place hopes – I don’t fancy Tottenham and can see them finishing out side the top 6. So if Liverpool beat us it will give them some confidence to go for the 4th place spot. They were unlucky not to beat City yesterday – so if producing that form against us – with our shot-shy attack – we could be in for a tough fight.

Possibly, but there’s still too much time left. They will certainly go through periods of good and bad form before the end of the season, as will we. It’s too early to know what will happen.
Also, it could be a good thing that we have this big game next week. There will be a bit more space for our attackers, and everyone will be up for it. Equally, it’s a bit of a worry because of the form Liverpool showed yesterday, but we shouldn’t be too worried.

Everything is more random and unpredictable at the start of a season.
Position in the league is no guide in August. The team is progressing. would prefer big teams early on while hey also are still establishing themselves.
This will be the year of breakthrough for Coquelin and the Ox in the Song role.
Liverpool away will suit us as long as we keep to the philosophy and don’t opt for route one because we have the beef up front.
Would like to see quality early crossing and for Giroud and Poldi to develop their burgeoning understanding. I think we’ll win 1-2!

I’m not a Jenkinson fan at all, I think his position is the most needed for cover from the transfer market … but he did play very well yesterday imo.

As for Diaby, I don’t see it at all.

Arteta was the reason we dominated the game. If you consider him an attacking midfielder (which is not how he’s ever played for Arsenal) then 6 was probably about right. However, he didn’t play this role at all, quite the opposite, and he didn’t put a foot wrong and made sure Stoke couldn’t build any momentum. In reality he deserves an 8 at the very least, and was definitely the MotM, even above Cazorla, who was effectively nullified in the 2nd half.
Also this was the best defensive performance we’ve had against a Stoke-like side in many years. Defensively, Mertesacker and Vermaelen were absolutely brilliant, again, at least 8 each, and the fullbacks were excellent defensively as well.
The fullbacks did attack well in general, got into good positions, but I agree that the crossing was poor from both, and this certainly didn’t help our attack.
It’s clear as anything what Steve Bould has done for the team already, but we need a goal to feed some confidence into the new attack.

Ok ratings but but the battle for the places is clear podolski. And the ox on both wing podolski will deliver and chamberlib seems to be more wahuge then escort and more brave then gervinho gervinho I like him but heisetats. Cazorla is great and giroud will score but he was trying get goal of the season with the over head and long range shot but h will do good defence is perfect in Perry happy

    Patience my friends!
You can’y buy a team, it has to be created.
We have the players, they have the potential.
We have emerging players who will surprise.
We finally have a defence, so anything is possible.
I predict that the gaps we have will be filled from within.
Left back cover is my only worry.
