Arsenal Transfer News: Wenger To Table £15m Bid For French Midfielder
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is set to table a £15m bid for Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye as he looks to buy a defensive midfielder this week.
As we enter the final stages of the summer transfer window, Football Talk will be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer news. Today, Arsenal are linked with Yohan Cabaye.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is set to table a £15m bid for Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye, according to the Daily Mail.
The report claims the Gunners boss has identified Cabaye as a potential replacement for the departed Alex Song, who left for Barcelona, and is expected to launch a £15m bid to sign the Frenchman before the transfer window slams shut on Friday night.
Wenger ruled out a move for fellow Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote after Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Stoke City, but the Mail claim it is Cabaye he really wants.
Wenger is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail:
‘I’m pleased with what I have, but yes I anticipate that we will do something. Defensive midfielder? It depends on the quality of the players available. Tiote is a good player, but he’s not on the way to Arsenal.’
Newcastle will do all they can to hang on to Cabaye and £15m is unlikely to be enough to persuade them into selling, despite the fact it would represent a huge profit on the fee they paid Lille just last summer, as it would leave them little time to bring in a replacement.
Boss Alan Pardew made it clear he wouldn’t be caught short this late in the window:
‘All my players are important, and they are hard to replace now. You lose a big player now and you try and take someone out from somewhere else and they want a replacement and time is suddenly running down. You can’t get anyone in and we want to avoid that.’
Pardew is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail:
Should Wenger fail to land the 26-year-old, it’s understood he may turn his attention back to long-term target Yann M’Vila as he tried to add a defensive midfielder to his ranks this week.
