Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that striker Dimitar Berbatov could yet shun a move to Fulham in favour of a return to Tottenham, according to Sky Sports.
Berbatov was due to fly out to Italy earlier in the week to complete a move to Fiorentina before Serie A rivals Juventus got involved and persuaded the striker to head for Turin.
But Fulham entered the fray at the last minute and the Bulgarian is understood to be on the verge of moving to Craven Cottage after undergoing a medical and agreeing personal terms on Thursday night.
Boss Martin Jol confirmed at his weekly press conference that he expected the move to be completed before tonight’s 11pm deadline.
However, Ferguson insists the deal with Fulham is not yet done and revealed there could yet be a final twist in the transfer saga, after hinted the 31-year-old could make a surprise return to White Hart Lane.
“I do not know what has happened,” said Ferguson.
“He has not gone yet. I do not know anything about it. There’s not been any contact from him.
“We thought he was in Italy but it turned out he isn’t. He could be anywhere. I really mean that.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he was at Tottenham. There are rumours going around. I do not think it is settled at Fulham.”
