Look Away Now Gooners – Silvestre Is Back At Arsenal
It’s something we Arsenal fans have had nightmares about, former player Mikael Silvestre is back at Arsenal! Is he just training or is Arsene going to sign him?
It’s something we Arsenal fans have had nightmares about….Mikael Silvestre is back at Arsenal!
The French defender spent two years with the Gunners between 2008 – 2010 and clocked up 43 appearances for the club, but unfortunately we failed to see the best of him and he was largely considered a liability.
The 35-year-old is now a free agent after being released by German side Werder Bremen this summer and is keen to find a new club here in England.
The Daily Mail report that Silvestre is back training with the Arsenal squad after being given permission to do so by boss Arsene Wenger.
Thankfully, this arrangement is almost certainly just a short-term favour to allow the Frenchman to keep his fitness levels up until he finds a new club. Wenger has previous of letting former players train with the club to maintain fitness. Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Sol Campbell and Jens Lehmann have all spent time with the squad in recent years.
Worryingly, Wenger also has previous in signing these O.A.P’s up, with Campbell, Henry and Lehmann all joining on short-term deals. Don’t get me wrong, all three were excellent during their times back with the club, especially ‘King Henry’. So there are times when former players coming back can be of benefit, but NOT Silvestre. Please god not Silvestre!
I think it’s safe to say Arsene’s just being Mr. Nice Guy here and giving Mikael a place to train as surely he isn’t the ‘top, top, top’ quality player Arsene Wenger was looking for during the transfer window?!
