Chelsea Confident Of Beating Arsenal To Shaw After Opening Talks Over £10m Deal
Chelsea are confident of beating Arsenal to the signing of left-back Luke Shaw after opening talks with Southampton over a potential 10million summer move.
Despite the transfer window now being closed there will still be plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Chelsea are understood to have open talks with Southampton over Arsenal target Luke Shaw.
Chelsea are confident of beating Arsenal to the signing of left-back Luke Shaw after opening talks with Southampton over a potential £10 million summer move, according to the Daily Mail.
The report claims the Blues have identified the England under-17 international as the ideal man to replace Ashley Cole at Stamford Bridge and they’ve made his signing a priority for the summer.
Shaw has been outstanding at full-back for newly promoted Southampton this season and earned a call-up to Stewart Pearce’s England under-21 squad for last months friendly with Sweden but was forced to pull out through injury.
The Mail claim that Chelsea have seen bids for Shaw rejected by Southampton both in January and last summer but have opened talks with the South coast club once again over a move at the end of the season and are believed to be confident of beating Arsenal to a £10 million deal – with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger also understood to be a huge admirer of the 17-year-old’s.
Chelsea’s current first choice left-back Ashley Cole only recently signed a new one-year extension to his contract at Stamford Bridge and is still very-much at the top of his game, so it’s unlikely Shaw will be able to oust the experienced defender just yet.

However, the Mail suggest that the Blues may look to secure a deal that would see them sign Shaw in the summer before loaning him straight back to the Saints for another season. This would make sense as it would mean the player would get another year of first team football under his belt before returning to Chelsea to become Cole’s long-term successor.
Arsenal have Kieran Gibbs and new signing Nacho Monreal to contest the left-back position so I’m not sure boss Arsene Wenger will see this area as a priority in the summer, potentially leaving Chelsea free to snap up one of the brightest talents in the game.
