Arsenal Emerge As Favourites Ahead Of United For £15m-Rated Bosnian Stopper
Arsenal have edged ahead of Man Ut in the race to sign Asmir Begovic but will have to match Stoke’s £15m valuation if they’re to lure the Bosnian to the Emirates
Despite the transfer window being closed there is still plenty of EPL news doing the rounds on the internet and in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsenal appear to be leading the chase for Asmir Begovic.
Arsenal have edged ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Asmir Begovic but will have to match Stoke’s £15m valuation if they’re to lure the Bosnian stopper to the Emirates, according to the Telegraph.
The report claims the Gunners made an enquiry over Begovic’s availability during the January transfer window and have once again been in contact with Stoke in recent weeks as boss Arsene Wenger looks to sign an experienced goalkeeper to challenge Wojciech Szczesny for the first team jersey next season.
The Telegraph believes Manchester United are also interested in Begovic with Sir Alex Ferguson looking to replace the outgoing Anders Lindegaard this summer but the run-away Premier League leaders aren’t necessarily looking for a new No.1 due to David De Gea’s improving form in recent months, and it’s understood Begovic will refuse to sign for any club with the guarantee of first-team football.
It leaves Arsenal in a strong position to land the highly-rated 25-year-old but the newspaper suggests the north Londoners will have to fork out around £15m to sign the Bosnian international this summer due to the fact he still has three years to run on his current contract at the Britannia Stadium.
Begovic has been one of the most consistent keepers in the Premier League over the past 2 years and I think he’d improve both Arsenal or Man Utd if they signed him. But the Manchester club have made a large investment in De Gea and he’s certainly improving, so unless Ferguson is going to sell the Spaniard this summer I can’t see him heading to Old Trafford.
Arsenal’s need for a reliable stopper is clear and while Szczesny is a huge talent, he needs an experienced keeper to learn from and who can push him to improve further, and Begovic would be the ideal candidate.
