Manchester United take on West Brom at the Hawthorns on Sunday. Here’s the team news including the latest on Phil Jones, Nemanja Vidic, Anders Lindegaard & more
Manchester United take on West Brom at the Hawthorns on Sunday in what will be Sir Alex Ferguson’s final game in charge at Old Trafford.
Ferguson has decided to bring to an end a trophy-laden 27 year career at United and he held his final pre-match press conference on Friday morning at Carrington. The Scot gave ManUtd.com the latest team news and as well as confirming he has no fresh injury worries to contend with, the 71-year-old revealed he plans to make some changes for his final game in charge.
Goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard will come in for regular No.1 David De Gea while Fergie’s yet to decide who will fill in at right back in the absence of the suspended Rafael – who continued to serve a three-match ban after being sent off against Chelsea two weeks ago.
Experienced defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are set to miss out with Jonny Evans and Phil Jones starting together in the centre of defence, with Ferguson calling the duo ‘the future’.
There was no talk of striker Wayne Rooney and whether he’ll be involved after the 27-year-old was left out of United’s final home game of the season against Swansea last Sunday after asking to leave the club this summer. Here’s what Sir Alex told the clubs official website:
“I don’t have any injury problems. I’ll make a few changes – maybe a few younger players will play.
“Anders (Lindegaard) will be in goal. I don’t have Rafael so I need to make a decision about right-back. I want to play Jones and Evans at centre-back – they could be the future. Rio (Ferdinand) and (Nemanja) Vidic will have to have a place on the bench! I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be great.”
