Arsene Wenger & Brendan Rodgers Both Respond To Suarez Reports
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers have both had their say on reports linking the Gunners with a move for striker Luis Suarez.
With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsene Wenger and Brendan Rodger respond to Luis Suarez move reports.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers have both had their say on reports linking the Gunners with a move for striker Luis Suarez.
Speculation has been rife over the past few days that the Gunners were ready to come back with an improved offer for the 26-year-old having seen their opening £30m offer rejected, with boss Wenger understood to be keen on luring the Uruguayan to the Emirates this summer.
Arsenal flew out to Indonesia on Thursday for the first leg of their pre-season tour of East Asia and at their press conference on Friday, Wenger refused to rule out a move or deny his interest when quizzed about Suarez:
“Suarez? As you know the transfer period demands secrets and confidentiality, so I can’t answer the question.”Wenger is quoted as saying by the Mirror.
Wenger is usually coy on transfer dealings so his answer will come as no surprise to Gunners fans, but it’s interesting that he didn’t take the opportunity to at least try and dampen the speculation. If anything, his refusal to deny any interest in the player will simply fuel the fire even more.
However, Liverpool boss Rodgers has claimed he speaks to Suarez almost on a daily basis and is adamant his star man shouldn’t be sold this summer, and reiterated that the Merseysiders are in a strong position as the player still has three years remaining on his current deal at Anfield.
“We communicate in some way nearly every day either through text or conversations,” the Reds boss told talkSPORT.
“Over the course of the last few months and towards the end of the season there has been a lot of speculation with Luis, but the fact is it remains the same.
“We value the player. He had a terrific season for us last year and showed his qualities. Since then I’ve been in communication with him through texts and conversations on the phone and it [the situation] is pretty much the same. He is a valued player. He is an absolute magician on the field.
“Luis is a real competitor, a real winner. He wants Liverpool to do so well but, like every player, every manager, and more importantly every football club, they want to be working at the very highest level.
“At the minute he is on a break, he is relaxing with his family. We are in constant communication. He has got three years left on his contract, we don’t want to sell him, and we hope everything will be fine for the summer.
“We want to bring in few more players to reinforce the group and we think we can put up a real fight next season.”
It’s certainly an intriguing situation and I get the feeling it still has a few more weeks left to run before anything is resolved. Will Arsenal be able to pull off a major coup and bring Suarez to north London? Will Liverpool hold him to his contract and force him to remain at Anfield? Or will a certain Spanish club enter the bidding to really spice things up? Only time will tell….
