Barcelona: Fabregas Not For Sale
Barcelona vice-president Josep Bartomeu has insisted Cesc Fabregas is not for sale after Manchester United had tabled a bid £26million for the midfielder.
With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Barcelona rule out selling Cesc Fabregas.
Barcelona vice-president Josep Bartomeu has insisted Cesc Fabregas is not for sale after Manchester United had tabled a bid for the midfielder, according to the Independent.
United boss David Moyes had suggested earlier on Friday that chief executive Ed Woodward was working on a deal to try and bring Fabregas to Old Trafford this summer, and he hoped to know more about how the negotiations were going after the club were believed to have tabled a £26m bid on Monday.
“The chief exec has been dealing with it just now and I am in contact with him.
“I’ll hopefully know a little more in the next day or so. I may have a bit more information in the next day or so about how it’s going.
“As far as players we’re looking to bring in, we’re trying very hard to make some additions to the squad.
“Hopefully there’ll be some good news in the not too distant future.” Moyes is quoted as saying by the Independent
However, the Catalans have moved quickly to play down speculation the midfielder could leave this summer, with vice-president Bartomeu insisting the 26-year-old is not for sale.
“Barcelona can assure [fans] we won’t listen to any offers for Cesc (Fabregas). It is totally ruled out, he’s not for sale.” Bartomeu is quoted as saying by the Independent
United had hoped to try and lure Fabregas back to the Premier League with the promise of regular first team football ahead of next summers World Cup, with Moyes seemingly desperate to add to his central midfield options this summer.
The Independent also suggest that Arsenal have been monitoring Fabregas’ situation as they have a clause in the players contract that allows them to first refusal to buy him back. However, boss Arsene Wenger claimed on Wednesday that his former skipper has decided to remain at the Nou Camp for another season.
“At the moment, Fabregas has decided to stay one more year at Barcelona.
“We have the clause in the contract so we would be on alert but at the moment that’s not something we’re after. Wenger is quoted as saying by the Mirror.
So it appears United’s move for Fabregas is a non-starter, unless the midfielder has a change of heart and decides to force a move out on Spain. Which appears unlikely at this point, particularly given how much he pushed to return ‘home’ from Arsenal two years ago.
