Transfer Gossip: Wenger Ready To Battle Moyes For Real Madrid Playmaker
Arsenal have been linked with a shock move for Real Madrid playmaker and Manchester United target Luka Modric, with the Croatian said to be unsettled in Spain.
With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsenal are ready to battle Man Utd for Luka Modric.
Arsenal have been linked with a shock move for Real Madrid playmaker and Manchester United target Luka Modric, according to reports.
The Croatian midfielder has struggled to establish himself at the Bernabeu since making a £33m move from Tottenham Hortspur last summer and was even voted as the worst signing of the season by readers of Marca.
The 27-year-old has been linked with a move back to the Premier League this summer with reports earlier this week suggesting Manchester United boss David Moyes has earmarked the player as a potential target after missing out on Cesc Fabregas, while Tottenham are believed to have shown an interest in taking the schemer back to White Hart Lane as part of any deal involving Gareth Bale heading to Madrid.
However, the Daily Star are one of several media outlets who’re reporting that Arsenal have also joined the chase to sign Modric with boss Arsene Wenger desperate to attract a big-name signing to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
The Gunners have already missed out on Gonzalo Higuain to Napoli, Brazilian attacker Bernard also looks set to slip through their fingers while a deal for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez remains a long way off, so Wenger is understandably keen to bring in a marquee signing to appease disgruntled supporters.
The newspaper suggests that Modric is now unsettled in Spain and would consider a move back to England but any interested party may have to wait and see what new coach Carlo Ancelotti’s plans are for the Croatian international before any potential deal can be done.
With Paul Scholes now retired and doubts continuing over the long-term fitness of Darren Fletcher, I understand the need for a player like Modric at Old Trafford. The champions are desperate for of a midfielder ball-player and the former Spurs man would be an excellent addition to Moyes’ squad.
However, I’m not sure I see where Modric would fit in at Arsenal. They already have Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Santi Cazorla who all play in the middle of the park and enjoy seeing a lot of the ball, so I’m not convinced he’s the type of player they should be concentrating on this summer.
But all of this is paper-talk at this point and there is a long way to go before any deal is done that would see Modric coming back to England. Watch this space….
