Suarez Tells Reporters He’s Staying At Liverpool And Will Sign New Contract
Has Luis Suarez performed a dramatic U-turn and decided to stay at Liverpool? Well quotes emanating from Uruguay overnight appear to suggest he’s done just that
With the summer transfer window in full swing, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, could Luis Suarez have performed a dramatic U-turn?
Has Luis Suarez performed a dramatic U-turn and decided to stay at Liverpool? Well quotes emanating from Uruguay overnight appear to suggest so.
The controversial striker is in Tokyo on international duty with Uruguay and the Mirror carry quotes from newspaper El Observador that claim Suarez has now decided he will remain at Anfield due to the support the fans have shown him.
“For now, due to all of the people’s affection (for me), I will be staying.” Suarez is quoted as saying.
This report was backed up by South American journalist Martin Chaquero, who claimed on his Twitter page that Suarez had told him he will now be staying at Liverpool and is expected to sign an extension.
“Luis Suarez confirms to me he will not leave Liverpool. The support of the fans has influenced his decision,” Chaquero said.
“Suarez see it as likely that he’ll sign a renewal (extension) to the contract that binds him to Liverpool.”
If these quotes are accurate, it would be a stunning turn-around by the 26-year-old and come as a huge blow to Arsenal. Just 8 days ago he told the Telegraph he wanted to leave Liverpool for north London in search of Champions League football, accusing the club of reneging on an agreement to let him leave.
He’s since been forced to train alone with boss Brendan Rodgers demanding a public apology and reports earlier this week suggested the striker was ready to hand in a transfer request to try and finally push through a move. And now he’s decided to stay?
If he does sign a new deal, the disputed clause will surely be set in stone. Either he has a buy-out clause or he doesn’t. And he’ll almost certainly leave next summer if Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League again, but where does this leave Arsenal in their search for a marquee striker this summer?
