Chelsea have given an injury update on striker Fernando Torres tonight and have confirmed he’s expected to miss around three weeks with a knee injury.
The Spaniard was forced off during the early stages of Tuesday’s 4-0 win over Steaua Bucharest after falling awkwardly on his left knee.
Manager Jose Mourinho said after the game he was hoping for positive news on the injury but the club have confirmed on Chelseafc.com this evening that after further examinations the 29-year-old has suffered a medial collateral ligament injury and will be out for approximately three week.
A statement read:
Chelsea Football Club can confirm Fernando Torres suffered a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee in the Champions League group game at Steaua Bucharest on Tuesday evening.
The 29-year-old is expected to be out for approximately three weeks.
The injury came at a bad time for Torres as he was just starting to find some form this season and put in an excellent display against Tottenham on Saturday.
However, while the injury is a blow, his absence is softened by the upcoming two week international break so the striker is only likely to miss Sunday’s trip to Carrow Road to face Norwich and the home game against Cardiff on October 19th.
He will then in a race to be fit to take on Schalke in the Champions League on the 22nd ahead of the visit of Manchester City to Stamford Bridge the following Sunday.
