Arsenal News: Fresh Injury Concern | Talks Begin With Defender Over 4-Year Deal

With fans looking to keep themselves busy during the boring international break, we bring you a couple of pieces of news from Arsenal FC today.

Szczesny worry

First up and the Express are reporting that Arsenal have a fresh injury worry to deal with after goalkeeper Wojeich Szczesny missed Poland’s training session on Tuesday with an ankle problem.

The stopper was close to being substituted during Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford after a nasty clash of heads with Phil Jones and it appears he’s been in the wars again.

The newspaper claims Szczesny has aggravated an ankle injury and is now a doubt to face Slovakia on Friday evening after being forced to miss training today.

Another injury is the last thing Arsene Wenger needs with his squad being decimated by injuries during the first few months of the season. Hopefully, Szczesny’s problem is nothing too serious and he’ll be back in action soon.

Mertesacker talks begin

Now for some good news and the Daily Mail are one of several media outlets reporting that the club have opened talks with Per Mertesacker over a new four-year deal.

The German’s current contract has 18 months left to run and the report claims that Arsene Wenger is desperate to get the 29-year-old tied down to a new long-term deal as soon as possible.

Mertesacker has been a key performer during our impressive start to the season with his partnership alongside Laurent Koscielny rock solid, so it’s no surprise to hear the boss wants his future resolved.

The newspaper suggests that Arsenal chiefs have held initials talks with the defenders agents and are confident a deal will be agreed before the New Year that will see the experienced centre-back get a sizable pay-rise on his current £65,000-a-week wage.
