Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has been forced to apologise after being pictured wearing a ‘suicide bomber style’ fancy dress outfit.
A picture of Smalling wearing the costume – known as a ‘Jagerbomber’ in reference to the popular drink and includes a fake circuit board, a mobile phone, an empty bottle of Jegermeister and cans of Red Bull – was plastered on the front page of today’s Sun newspaper.
According to the Daily Mail, Smalling wore the costume to a private party hosted by the defender and his girlfriend at their home over Christmas, but he’s drawn criticism due to it’s insensitive nature.
Smalling’s management company, Wasserman Media Group, have now been forced to release a statement apologising for the players actions but insists no harm was meant.
‘Chris and his girlfriend hosted a fancy dress party to celebrate Christmas and their belated birthdays with close friends in the assumed privacy of his own home,’
‘He dressed in a costume consisting of empty bottles of Jagermeister and cans of Red Bull strapped to his chest in an attempted comedy play on the popular “Jagerbomb drink”.
‘Although he fully accepts in hindsight it was an ill-thought out and insensitive decision, absolutely no harm was intended whatsoever and he apologises for any offence caused.’
Wasserman Media Group said in a statement.
The 24-year-old clearly thought he was having a bit of harmless fun in the privacy of his own home, but he failed to think through the repercussions if a photo was leaked to the press.
