Manchester United crashed out of the Capital One Cup in the most dramatic fashion as Sunderland booked their place at Wembley with a penalty shoot-out victory at Old Trafford.
The visitors went into the game holding a 2-1 advantage from the first leg but United drew level through Jonny Evans just before half time. With the game tied at 2-2 on aggregate, it went to extra-time and Sunderland looked like they’d won it when David De Gea spilled a Phil Bardsley effort into the net in the 119th minute.
However, United somehow forced penalties when Adnan Januzaj set up Javier Hernandez to make it 2-1 – 3-3 on aggregate – in the 120th minute. Vito Mannone then made himself the hero as he saved the decisive penalty from Rafael to send Sunderland to Wembley with a 2-1 shoot-out win.
