Man Utd Expected To Make Summer Bid For Ivory Coast International
Manchester United boss David Moyes is expected to launch a bid to try and sign an Ivory Coast midfielder in the summer after bring knocked back in January.
The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, news on Man Utd’s interest in Cheick Tiote.
Manchester United are expected to make a summer bid for Cheick Tiote after making an enquiry to Newcastle United about the midfielder last month, according to the Daily Star.
Tiote has been an excellent signing for Newcastle since they snapped him up from FC Twente back in 2010 and he’s gone on to establish himself as one of the top defensive midfielders in the Premier League.
It appears his no-nonsense approach has caught the eye of United boss David Moyes with the Star claiming that not only did he try to sign the Ivorian during his time with Everton, but he is also understood to have enquired about the players availability during last month’s transfer window.
With the Geordies already in the process of selling Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint Germain, understandably they were reluctant to let another one of their star men leave, so United’s approach was knocked back.
However, the newspaper suggests that Tiote’s representatives have been made aware of United’s interest and Moyes will go back in for the 27-year-old this summer as the Scot tries to bring in some much-needed new blood to his midfield.
It’s been a hugely disappointing first season in charge for Moyes at Old Trafford with the club knocked out of both domestic cup competitions already as well as languishing down in seventh place in the Premier League table and in danger of missing out on Champions League qualification.
The record signing of Juan Mata in January shows both Moyes and the club are intent on getting the champions back challenging at the top of the table but in order to do so, it’s clear they also need to strengthen in midfield and Tiote could be a shrewd purchase.
He may not be the most high-profile name but he has plenty of Premier League experience and would be an excellent alternative to Michael Carrick – who’ll be 33-year next season and has struggled this year with injury. There’s no indication how much Newcastle may value him at, but it will be interesting to see if he ends up at Old Trafford this summer.
