Manchester United welcome Bayern Munich to Old Trafford on Tuesday night for the first leg of their Champions League quarter final clash. Here is the latest team news and our predicted team for the game.
United boss David Moyes held his pre-match press conference on Monday afternoon but gave little away about his team selection and failed to provide reporters with any update on the fitness of his squad.
What we do know is that right-back Rafael is a doubt after being forced off at half time during Saturday’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa with a thigh injury. Chris Smalling has been out with a hamstring injury in recent weeks but took part in training today so could come in if the Brazilian is ruled out.
Rio Ferdinand (back) and Jonny Evans (calf) have also been nursing injuries of late but they too took part in light training on Monday, along with Antonio Valencia – who missed the weekend game with a knee injury but could return to the starting eleven tomorrow.
Patrice Evra is suspended for the game so United fans will be glad to know that Alex Buttner looks set to play, despite ending the Villa game with a tight hamstring.
Ryan Giggs sat with Moyes at the press conference today and was instrumental in United’s comeback win over Olympiakos in the previous round, so the veteran could be drafted back in against Bayern to add some big-game experience in midfield.
Shinji Kagawa was in excellent form at the weekend and with Juan Mata ineligible, the Japanese attacker could retain his place, while Danny Welbeck may be given the nod on the left due to his hard-working style.
Wayne Rooney will continue up front with Robin van Persie ruled out with a knee injury. Here’s the team we think Moyes will select:
