Transfer News: Unsettled Barcelona Midfielder Set For Premier League Return?
Liverpool and Man Utd are ready to offer former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song a return to the Premier League with Barcelona set to sell the player this summer
As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, could Alex Song be heading back to the Premier League?
Liverpool and Manchester United are ready to offer former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song a return to the Premier League with Barcelona set to sell the player this summer, according to reports today.
Song enjoyed seven years with Arsenal where he made over 200 appearances for the club before being sold to Barca in 2012 in a deal believed to be worth around £16million.
His time at the Nou Camp hasn’t gone according to plan though, with the 26-year-old struggling to establish himself as a first team regular, and he’s managed just 18 appearances in the league this season with many coming on as a substitute.
Understandably the player is becoming increasingly frustrated at his lack of regular action and it seems the Catalans are ready to cut their losses and sell the Cameroonian international at the end of the season.
The Mirror claim that Liverpool and Manchester United are keen on bringing Song back to England and the player is understood to be open to the idea of joining either club, despite his previous affiliation with rivals Arsenal.
The former Gunner confirmed last month that when he does leave the Nou Camp he will head back to the Premier League, opening the door to a potential move to either Anfield or Old Trafford.
“If I leave Barcelona it will be to return to the Premier League.
“I will return to England one day, that’s for sure.” Song is quoted as saying by the Mirror.
Song was a player that certainly divided opinion during his time at the Emirates, with some believing he was a useful defensive midfielder, while others found him to be frustratingly inconsistent and with a tendency to give away stupid free-kicks around the box.
It’s fair to say he’s hardly set the world alight at Barcelona over the past two years, but playing and training with some of the best players on the planet is only going to make you a better player, so he could be a useful addition to Liverpool or Man Utd.
The duo could also pick him up for a cut-price fee, with the newspaper suggesting Barcelona are willing to sell for just £8m, which would represent something of a bargain for a player of Song’s experience.
Whoever comes in to replace interim boss Ryan Giggs at United is expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer and central midfield is an area they are likely to want to strengthen. Song could be a useful player to have around the squad and would offer an alternative to Michael Carrick in front of the defence.

Liverpool are also expected to be active in the market as Brendan Rodgers looks to build a squad capable of competing in the Champions League next season and Song has plenty of experience in playing in Europe’s elite competition, but we’ll have to wait and see if either club are able to do a deal with Barca.
