Man Utd Confirm Blow As Star Picks Up Injury In Training
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has picked up an injury in training and will miss the rest of Spain’s World Cup group stage, the club have confirmed
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has picked up an injury in training and could miss the rest of Spain’s World Cup group stage, the club have confirmed today.
De Gea is currently away with the Spain squad at the World Cup and was among the substitutes as the holders got off to the worst possible start after losing being thrashed by Robin van Persie’s Holland 5-1 on Friday night.
Legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas was at fault for several of the goals and there had been talk that De Gea could be called up to replace the Real Madrid man for Wednesday’s crucial clash with Chile..
However, the 23-year-old has now missed out on that opportunity after the club confirmed on ManUtd.com that De Gea has picked up an injury in training over in Brazil and could now be ruled out for the foreseeable future.
A statement from the Royal Spanish Football Federation confirmed the news and revealed that the keeper will be assessed on a ‘day-by-day’ basis:
“After undergoing tests, it was decided that David de Gea would not take part in the team’s afternoon training session owing to muscle discomfort in the gluteal region.
“The Spanish national team’s medical services will evaluate day-by-day the goalkeeper’s recovery to determine his reincorporation into the group.” the statement said on ManUtd.com
Thankfully the injury doesn’t appear to be a serious one so De Gea should be back relatively quickly, but it’s now extremely unlikely he’ll be able to play against Chile. With the pressure on Casillas following his poor display against Holland, de Gea would have been hoping to impress in training this week to give Vicente del Bosque a decision to make and possibly force his way into the bosses thinking.
