Arsenal Line-Up Audacious Move For Chelsea Ace
A very intriguing report coming from the Express newspaper who claim that Arsenal are lining-up an audacious £7m move for Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.
As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Arsenal are linked with a move for a Chelsea defender.
A very intriguing report coming from the Express who claim that Arsenal are lining-up an audacious £7m move for Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.
The newspaper suggests that Arsene Wenger isn’t prepared to sanction the sale of Thomas Vermaelen until he’s secured a replacement, and apparently he’s identified Ivanovic as the man for the job.
Vermaelen’s future is in serious doubt as he has just 12 months remaining on his current contract and is highly unlikely to sign an extension after losing his first team place over 18 months ago.
The uncertainty has led to speculation linking him with a switch to Manchester United with new boss Louis van Gaal reportedly keen for the Belgian international to add some experience to his back-line following the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
However, it seems the Gunners won’t let their club captain leave until a replacement is found and the Express claim that Wenger is lining-up a shock £7m bid for Chelsea defender Ivanovic, with the Frenchman keen for the Serbian international to replace Bacary Sagna at right-back and also act as cover in the centre of defence.
Ivanovic has been a key player for the Blues in recent years and was virtually ever-present last season, featuring 50 times, with the majority of his appearances coming at right-back. Jose Mourinho has shown no sign that he’s set to replace or drop the 30-year-old and Ivanovic hasn’t made any noises about wanting a move, so it’s certainly an audacious move by Wenger, but one that’s ultimately likely to end in failure.

Even if Mourinho was prepared to sell the versatile defender, £7m isn’t likely to be enough to persuade them to cash-in and even if the Gunners did meet the asking price, it’s questionable whether Jose would want to do business with his old foe Arsene Wenger, so this is one piece of transfer news that is highly unlikely to come to anything.
