Man Utd Open Formal Talks Over Potential €40m Deal For Long-Term Arsenal Target

Manchester United have opened talks over a potential €40m deal to sign Arsenal and Liverpool target Arda Turan from Atletico Madrid, according to reports.

United are believed to be in the market for more big-money signings this summer with vice-chairman Ed Woodward declaring earlier this week that the club could afford to break the world transfer record if they wanted to.

The former champions have been strongly linked with moves for Arturo Vidal and Angel Di Maria in recent weeks but with those deals now looking increasingly unlikely, it seems Louis van Gaal has turned his attention to other targets.

The Metro cite reports coming out of France that claim United have now opened official talks with Atletico Madrid for exciting attacker Arda Turan, who has a €40m (£32m) buy-out clause in his contract, with the 27-year-old understood to be keen to discuss a potential switch to Old Trafford.

The Express also support this claim by suggesting the Red Devils have stepped up their interest in Turan and could be ready to meet the attackers release figure, but may face competition from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool – who have previously been linked with the Turkish international.

The news comes after Turan’s agent, Ahmet Bulut, confirmed an English club had submitted an offer for his client. He said:

“Arda is playing at a big club with big goals and wants to be a part of their success.

“We have received an offer from an English club. We will see.” Bulut is quoted as saying by the Express.

Turan has just come off the back of an impressive season that saw him chip in with 9 goals and 6 assists to help Atletico land the La Liga title and make it all the way to the final of the Champions League, where they lost out to rivals Real.

Although speculation suggests that he could be open to a move to United this summer, the player has only recently bought a new house in the Spanish capital so it it’s unclear whether he’ll be prepared to uproot his family and move to England if United did decide to meet his buy-out fee.

It also remains to be seen whether the likes of Arsenal or Liverpool will also step up their interest in the winger. The Gunners have recently signed Alexis Sanchez so it would be unlikely Arsene Wenger will look to splash out big money on another attacker this summer, but Liverpool do seem to be in the market for big-name signings, so they could pose a threat to United.

Brendan Rodgers still has plenty of money left over to spend this summer and he’s been linked with a number of high profile players as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of their return to the Champions League this season, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Liverpool opted to rival United to Turan’s signature if he decided he wanted a new challenge.
